My Sister Bought My Child, We Didn’t Know

DEAR AUNTIE ABENA,

This story I’m coming to share with you is my true story. I was sharing it with my class and thought it wise to share with a wider audience. Please keep me hidden for safety reasons.

When I was 19 years I found myself pregnant. I didn’t want my parents to know because I knew they’ll be very much disappointed in me. I wasn’t dating the father before I got pregnant and he was 18 and still in school, I didn’t want to burden him and didn’t tell him either. Luckily for me, my stomach was very flat but in the 7th month it showed a little. I moved to stay with a friend who knew about it.

My Husband Abandoned Our Baby to Go and Fuck

We arranged with a nurse to take the baby when I delivered. On the day that I put to bed, the only thing I saw was my baby with blood all over and some black things between the legs, crying. The midwife took the baby away and I was told to go back to my bed before my friend came for me. I went home the following month without telling anyone what I did.

A month later, my big sister invited us to the Naming Ceremony of her baby. Before this, when I was pregnant, she was then pregnant which I was happy for her but couldn’t tell her about mine. When her daughter was 5 years old, she got pregnant again and due to some complications couldn’t go to work. I was the one with her day and night, helping her take care of her daughter and other things which made me really love my niece. When she delivered, I traveled and came back 3 years later with my husband.

Hmm. After 5 years of marriage with no issue, he divorced me which really affected me. He’s the only one I told the truth about giving my child away and he used it against me, accusing me of killing his babies because I don’t want to give birth. It wasn’t true but he kept saying that. Hmm.

I decided to concentrate on schooling and working. Then last year, I went to visit my sister and my niece who came to meet me at the gate. Everybody who saw us kept saying she resembled me more than the mum. We’re almost the same height but the same weight and we almost look like twins. The more they said it, the more I suspected it but I was afraid to know the truth and my sister is someone I’ll least imagine will tell such a big lie.

6 months ago, my sister called me and said she thinks I need to take a DNA with my niece. I was shocked when she told me she paid a nurse for a baby which she suspects is mine. I was shocked because I’ve never told her my secret before she told me she met my ex husband and whiles they were talking, he mentioned my baby. Hmm. The DNA came and that’s my daughter but we can’t tell her. My sister’s marriage will be destroyed because her husband trusts her completely and will never forgive her for lying to him.

Auntie Abena, so I see my daughter, I talk to her and do everything a mother can do for her daughter but I can’t tell her the truth. I don’t know what to do because I doubt she’ll forgive me for what I did. Auntie Abena, secrets can kill the soul. Hmm
